Pants and shorts are harder to replicate than tops because fit is so much more critical. A slightly oversized hoodie can look intentional. Denim is the most demanding subcategory. Authentic premium denim uses specific cotton blends, rope-dyed indigo, and chain-stitched hems. Denim Deep Dive

The second factor is the weave. Selvedge denim has a clean, finished edge that prevents unraveling and looks great when cuffed. It is woven on shuttle looms, which is a slower, more traditional process. Most reps are not true selvedge because shuttle looms are rare, but some factories produce a convincing imitation with finished edges. We note whether each pair is true selvedge or faux-selvedge.
Hardware is the third differentiator. Authentic premium jeans use branded buttons, rivets, and zipper pulls. The metal should feel solid and develop a natural patina over time. Cheap reps use lightweight zinc hardware that feels hollow and can break under stress. We inspect and photograph the hardware on every sample, noting brand accuracy and weight.
Shorts, Cargos, and Joggers
Shorts are simpler than pants but still need proper proportions. The inseam length determines whether shorts look stylish or awkward. Most current fashion favors a seven to nine-inch inseam for a modern look. Longer shorts can work for athletic or utilitarian styles, but very long shorts generally look dated. Cargo shorts and pants have seen a major revival. The modern cargo is slimmer than the baggy versions of the early 2000s, with pockets that are functional but not oversized. We look for cargos with a clean taper, pockets that sit flat when empty, and drawstring or belt-loop waistbands that allow adjustment. The best cargo reps use ripstop cotton that is durable without being stiff.
Joggers bridge the gap between casual and smart-casual. A good pair of joggers should have ribbed cuffs that sit cleanly above the ankle, a drawstring waist that holds tension, and a tapered leg that works with both sneakers and low-profile boots. Fabric choice is key here. French terry is softer and more casual, while tech-fleece has a smoother face and a more polished look.
